How to rebuild your credit after an IVA

An IVA stays on your credit file for 6 years from when it started, even if it completes sooner. Rebuilding afterwards means an accurate file, careful use of credit, and consistently on-time payments.

An IVA (individual voluntary arrangement) stays on your credit file for 6 years from the date it started, whether it runs its full term or completes early. Rebuilding your credit file afterwards is mostly about making sure that entry is accurate, then adding a consistent, on-time payment history alongside it.

There’s no way to remove an IVA from your credit file before the 6 years are up, even once it’s finished and removed from the Insolvency Register. What you’re building towards is a stronger, more recent history sitting next to the IVA entry, so a lender looking at your file sees more than just the arrangement itself.

Step 1: confirm the IVA is showing correctly

Once your IVA has completed, get your statutory credit report from Experian, Equifax and TransUnion and check that:

  • The IVA is marked as completed, with the correct start date.
  • Accounts included in the IVA aren’t still showing as separately owed, unpaid debts.
  • Removal from the Insolvency Register has gone through, usually around 3 months after the IVA ends.

If anything looks wrong, raise it with the lender first and then the credit reference agency if it isn’t resolved. Our guide on correcting errors on your credit file explains the process.

Step 2: understand what the 6 years actually covers

The 6-year period runs from your IVA’s start date, not from when it completed. This means someone who took 5 years to finish a 5-year IVA has only 1 year left on their file after completion, while someone who settled an IVA early after 3 years still has 3 years left to run. Our guide on remortgaging 6 years after an IVA covers what changes once the entry finally drops off.

Step 3: check your IVA’s own terms about your home

Many IVAs include a clause requiring you to try to release equity from your home, often towards the end of the arrangement, sometimes in the final 6 months. Some IVAs are extended, often by up to 12 months, if a remortgage isn’t possible at that point. This is separate from general credit rebuilding, but it’s worth checking your own IVA terms or asking your supervisor, since it can affect timing. Our main page on remortgaging after an IVA explains this in more depth.

Step 4: rebuild with small, well-managed credit

After an IVA, choice of new credit is usually limited at first, often to credit builder cards or similar products aimed at rebuilding a damaged file. Used carefully, spending a small amount and repaying it in full each month, these can help demonstrate reliable repayment behaviour going forward. Our guide on do credit builder cards help you get a mortgage? explains what to look for.

Rebuilding step What it does
Check the IVA shows as completed with the right dates Confirms your file reflects the arrangement accurately
Confirm removal from the Insolvency Register Separate from the credit file, but worth checking around 3 months after completion
Use a small amount of credit and repay in full Builds a recent, positive payment history
Register on the electoral roll Helps lenders verify your identity
Pay every bill on time from completion onwards Often the single biggest factor a lender’s own scoring looks at

Step 5: be on the electoral register and pay everything on time

Being on the electoral register at your current address helps lenders confirm your identity, which is a standard part of any application. From there, the most valuable thing you can do is pay everything, from credit accounts to household bills that report to credit reference agencies, on time, every time. A clean run of on-time payments since your IVA completed is the strongest evidence you can build for a future lender.

Avoid multiple applications close together

Each credit application usually leaves a hard search that other lenders can see, generally for up to 12 months. Applying for several products in a short space of time, particularly if some are declined, can make your file look stretched, even if that isn’t the real picture. It’s generally better to use a soft search or eligibility checker where one is offered, and to space applications out.

Remember, lenders don’t see a single “score”

The number shown in a free credit checking app isn’t what a mortgage lender sees. Lenders look at your credit report and apply their own scoring and lending criteria, and each agency in any case uses its own scale. Our guide on what credit score do mortgage lenders use? explains this further. What tends to matter more is the pattern on your file since the IVA completed, rather than chasing a particular number.

What this means if you’re remortgaging

Lenders who consider mortgage applications after an IVA usually want to see how you’ve managed money since it completed, alongside the IVA itself. A consistent on-time payment record, an accurate credit file, and being upfront with an adviser about the IVA rather than hoping it won’t surface all help. If your own IVA included a requirement to try to remortgage before it ended, checking that clause with your supervisor first avoids surprises later.

Our page on remortgaging after a completed IVA sets out what an adviser typically wants to know, and if you’re still managing other debts alongside rebuilding your credit, free advice from MoneyHelper, StepChange or National Debtline is worth using before you take on any further borrowing.

Frequently asked questions

Does completing an IVA early remove it from your credit file sooner?

No. An IVA stays on your credit file for 6 years from the start date, whatever point it completes. Finishing early is still worth doing, since it ends the arrangement and its restrictions, but it doesn't shorten the credit file entry.

Is an IVA removed from the Insolvency Register when it ends?

Yes, usually around 3 months after it completes. The Insolvency Register is separate from your credit file, so removal from the register doesn't affect the 6-year credit file entry, which runs from the start date regardless of when the register entry is removed.

Can you use a credit card while rebuilding after an IVA?

Often yes, though choice is usually limited at first to credit builder cards or similar products. Used carefully and paid off in full, these can help build a recent, positive payment history. See our guide on credit builder cards for what to check.

Do lenders treat an IVA the same as a bankruptcy once it's finished?

Not necessarily. Lenders vary in how they view a completed IVA compared with a bankruptcy, and some may look more favourably on an IVA that was seen through to completion. Our page on remortgaging after a completed IVA looks at what tends to matter.
